“That was the thing I had going back in my hometown… playing with the bad girls at the soccer club”

Raised in the rural town of Hirtshals in Denmark, Ditte Reffstrup used to get her teenage fashion fix glued to MTV or trawling local charity shops. Now as the creative director of Ganni, her own Copenhagen-based fashion line, Ditte finds herself looking for inspiration as far afield as Los Angeles and Tokyo. Despite winning awards and having her designs stocked in more than 20 countries around the world, she says her brand can best be described in much the same way as her kitchen: “Scandinavian in style, but a little messy.”

Can you remember the moment you realized you wanted to be a fashion designer?

There wasn’t one person or thing—it’s just always been a part of my life. When I was in kindergarten, I’d crawl under the bed screaming if my mom wanted to put a pair of overal...
