The world is full of needless suffering. How should each of us respond? GiveWell’s CEO explains how to make every charitable dollar go further.

Back in 2006, Elie Hassenfeld was 25 years old, a recent college graduate and working in finance. Conscious of his good fortune, he and a few friends decided to give some of their earnings to charity, but when they started looking into potential causes, they discovered that the process was surprisingly opaque. “It was very hard to get good information about what organizations do, and how well it works,” he says. “There’s a lot of marketing, a lot of claims—but very little evidence.”
