It’s like going to your grandparents’ house.” Brother Troi Bao Tang is smiling, his shaven head capped with a soft russet hat, a scarf draped around his neck—measures to keep out the late-autumn chill. Originally from Indonesia, he has lived since 2009 as part of Plum Village, a global Buddhist community headquartered in the Dordogne region of southwest France—a place that, for those who attend one of the monastery’s retreats, is apparently akin to visiting a much-loved relative.
