Today our lives are dictated by algorithms. They are used to determine credit ratings and hospital diagnoses, dating app matches and college admissions. Many of us have gotten used to robots making decisions about our lives, yet some remain understandably concerned. We most often come up against the whims of algorithms on social media, where they govern what content we see on our feeds and who sees our own posts. Recently, some content creators became enraged at a change to Instagram’s algorithm which they claim has threatened their livelihood. We spoke to two experts about the ethics of Instagram’s algorithm and the issue of forcing huge tech platforms to actually care about their users.
