There are only a handful of books about any kind of art practice that have been elevated to iconic status; the seminal photography book Images à la Sauvette by Henri Cartier-Bresson is one. First published by art publisher Tériade together with Simon and Schuster in 1952, Cartier-Bresson’s book of photography incorporates collected works from the early years of his career, and has reached cult status among photographers, artists and appreciators alike.

As part of  Mois de la Photo du Grand Paris 2017—a month-long celebration of photography—the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation is presenting an exhibition devoted entirely to Images à la Sauvette (now through April 23, 2017). The exhibition displays a range of vintage prints and archival photographs that document the creation of the book and its history up until its facsimile reprint in 2014. First editions of Images à la Sauvette sell at auction for thousands of dollars, so this exhibition is a rare opportunity to discover a work that has influenced generations of photographers.
