John and Julie have been married for 38 years. They both had previous relationships that ended in divorce.

John Gottman and Julie Schwartz met in 1986 when John, a psychologist, was a professor at the University of Washington. John had spent the previous 15 years researching what makes some marriages work and what leads others to divorce. It was an interest that Julie, a clinical psychologist, shared and five years into their own marriage, she began to wonder whether, rather than simply observing relationships implode, they could actually intervene and help.
