Nestled along Austin’s iconic South Congress Avenue, Hotel San José is both timeless and distinctly local—relaxed, creative and a little unexpected. Built in 1936 as an ultramodern motor court, the 40-room bungalow-style hotel was reimagined in 2000 by Texan hotelier Liz Lambert. Now celebrating its 25th anniversary under Bunkhouse Hotels, it remains effortlessly stylish, with concrete floors, handmade furniture and a courtyard pool enveloped by bamboo thickets. By day, the greenery provides shade; by night, the courtyard transforms into a communal gathering space for cocktails. Now part of the same group that manages The Standard hotels, Hotel San José embodies the Bunkhouse ethos—a spirit of hospitality echoed in its sister properties within the same neighborhood, including Hotel Saint Cecilia and Austin Motel.
