( 1 ) “Indie sleaze” was coined around 2021 to describe a wave of new music that seemed to draw inspiration from 2000s indie bands such as the Strokes and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Other bands have also rejected the label, including the LA duo the Hellp, who called it “insipid.”

( 2 ) Dean Blunt is a musician and producer who has been described as “an art-pop provocateur.” In addition to running the World Music label, he has released music with Inga Copeland as Hype Williams, through his hip-hop project Babyfather and in collaboration with rapper A$AP Rocky.

Nina Cristante is on top of the world. When she joins the video call, she floats across a backdrop of Earth as seen from outer space, her navy blue sweatshirt blending into the inky blackness. Her brown hair is tied up in a high ponytail and throughout the conversation she moves around the frame, changing her position with the casual precision of a ballerina. 

Cristante is not in outer space, of course, but in London, where she is preparing to go on a 20-show tour across Europe with Bar Italia, the post-punk band she formed in 2020 with Sam Fenton and Jezmi Fehmi. “It’s hyperfocused,” she says about the experience of being on tour. “You’re basically on the road and you’re geared up towards this one hour and a half. I meditate a lot and do a lot of breathing. You really need to shift mode.”
